Within weeks of moving to our new farm (located near
Oreon's Mount Hood National Forest and the Salmon-
Huckleberry Wilderness area), our first batch of bronze
turkeys were nearly all killed by coyotes in a single
night. That put a damper on our plans to raise grass-fed,
pasture-raised beef, lamb, pork, and poultry in a natural
setting. Coyote-proofing miles of fence line was
impossible, staying up all night long with spotlights was
out of the question, and guns, traps, and poison were out
of step with our natural-methods philosophy. After a
great deal of research, we found the answer -
Anatolian Shepherd Livestock Guardian Dogs.
We chose Anatolian Shepherds because they are
extremely effective livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) and a
natural solution to predation. They are a beautiful, calm,
loving, loyal and very intelligent breed. They are large
and powerful, but demonstrate a low prey instinct. They
will NOT herd or chase sheep or other animals, rather, if
appropriately trained, they are guardians and
protectors of livestock and family.
Anatolians protect largely by providing a deterrence
for would be intruders, but will hold their ground if
challenged by predators including wolves, coyotes,
mountain lions, bears, raccoons, and eagles. They live
and bond with their livestock full-time, and patrol their
territory regularly. They are acutely aware of any
changes or threat to their territory, livestock, and
family.
Due to their double coats and summer shedding,
Anatolians thrive in coldest winters, wettest springs,
and hottest summers with little or no protection.
Unlike their longer-haired cousins, the Great Pyrenees,
Anatolian's shorter coats are always carefree and
beautiful.
Without Anatolians, a farm like ours (free-range with
many predators) simply would not be possible. At
Cascade Meadows Farm we are strictly interested in
working Anatolians with outstanding livestock guardian
abilities and excellent breed conformation. For that
reason, our dogs come from one of the United States'
premier breeders of working Anatolians - Lucky Hit Ranch
in Texas.
